Referral Guide to SUD and Recovery Services

As Recovery Month closes out, here's a current rundown of what's available in the county, organized by level of care, to keep your referral list up to date.

Where to start

For patients who are uninsured or on Medicaid and don't know where to begin, Montgomery County DHHS's Access to Behavioral Health Services program is the best first call. Staff handle assessment, financial screening, and direct referrals to the right level of care. The number is 240-777-1770, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The county also maintains a full Behavioral Health Resource Directory available through MC311.

Medication-assisted treatment

MAT significantly reduces overdose mortality and is the standard of care for opioid use disorder. The county runs its own MAT clinic at 1500 East Gude Drive in Rockville (240-777-1680), serving uninsured and Medicaid-enrolled adults with methadone, buprenorphine, Vivitrol, and naltrexone alongside individualized counseling and care coordination. Walk-ins are accepted.

Inpatient and residential

Maryland Treatment Centers operates three programs in Rockville in partnership with Montgomery County DHHS. Avery Road Treatment Center provides short-term inpatient detox and stabilization for adults, typically 21 to 28 days (301-762-5613). Avery House for Women and Children offers residential treatment for women with up to two children under 12, with stays of 90 to 180 days. Avery Road Combined Care provides longer-term residential programming with integrated mental health services, typically 90 to 120 days.

Peer support and community programs

Pick Up the Pieces connects Montgomery County residents with peer support specialists, recovery coaches, and community services. It's a useful referral for patients who aren't ready for formal treatment but need support staying connected.

Crisis

The county's Crisis Center is available 24 hours a day at 240-777-4000. Patients can also call or text 988, which covers both mental health and substance use crises. For physicians

MCMS's Physicians' Resource Network provides free, confidential support for physicians navigating their own substance use. No insurance is filed and no electronic records are kept. Appointments are typically available within 24 to 36 hours. Reach the program through MCMS at 301-921-4300.
