2026-27 Respiratory Season Evidence & Recommendations
On September 2, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Vaccine Integrity Project (VIP), announced the release of an independent evidence review to inform respiratory virus immunization recommendations for the 2026-27 season. These recommendations were developed by:
- American Academy of Pediatrics (<19 years of age)
- American Academy of Family Physicians (≥19 years of age and health care personnel)
- American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (pregnancy)
- Infectious Diseases Society of America (immunocompromised)
The AMA partnered with VIP to engage medical specialty societies and public health organizations in three ways: identify key policy questions, review emerging evidence to inform immunization recommendations and communicate findings to clinicians and patients.
Also on September 2, JAMA published evidence reviews for the three respiratory pathogens: Flu, COVID, and RSV as well as a Perspective piece on the collaboration to help ensure physicians and other health professionals have the latest evidence behind immunization recommendations for their patients. The latest, high-quality scientific evidence found that immunizations against influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continue to provide meaningful protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Reassuringly, researchers found no new safety concerns in comparative studies.
The AMA also launched a digital resource hub of immunization materials for clinicians and patients to help amplify these recommendations at www.SpreadTheFacts.org.
