A Caller Posing as the DEA Targeted a Local Practice

Irfana Ali, M.D., FACEP, former board member and Medical Director of Fast Track Urgent Care, asked us to pass along a warning. A caller claiming to be a DEA agent recently phoned her practice and told front desk staff he was calling about her medical license, which he said was being used fraudulently.

This is a known scam. The DEA says its personnel will never call to demand money or payment, will never ask for personal or sensitive information, and will never notify anyone of an investigation or legal action by phone. Real notices come in person or by official letter.

If your office gets a call like this, don't share any information and hang up.

You can report it to the FBI at ic3.gov or to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If anyone gave out a Social Security or DEA registration number, go to identitytheft.gov.

A quick heads-up to your front desk team this week could save your practice a lot of trouble.
